Currently, the largest supercomputer in South Korea is ‘Nurion,’ ranked as the 17th most powerful in the world. Located at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, it is entirely based on American technology. Therefore, South Korea is funding the development of its first supercomputing CPU designed for AI and high-performance computing (HPC).
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) is collaborating with Supergate and Arm to develop a new CPU capable of handling complex, precision computations for supercomputing programs and energy-efficient operations. As all HPC resources in Korea currently rely on Intel processors, this project is expected to be a significant advancement for the development of large-scale systems in the future, should it meet its performance and efficiency goals.
