Supergate and Skychips have completed a deal to develop wearable wireless charging chips. Supergate has digital transmission technology for wireless charging, and Skychips has analog IP technology for wireless charging.

Joo Young-joon, head of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s industrial policy office, and 20 selected companies to participate in the Starfabless project took a commemorative photo at the “Global Starfabless Launch Ceremony.” (Photo = Ministry of Industry) The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has selected a total of 20 companies including 10 global Starfabless companies (Above Semiconductor, 3ALogics, Point-to-Technology, Haidep, AID Technology, Chips & Media, Jeju Semiconductor, Padoo, Dongun Anatek, Pixel Plus), 10 Rising Starfabris (Mobilint, Supergate, Sapien Semiconductor, Open Edge Technology, Qualitas Semiconductor, EM Coretech, Techwith U, Power LSI, Solid View, and Hatch Tech).

The semiconductor design sector, along with foundry, is a field with high entry barriers due to the two pillars of the system semiconductor market or high-quality technology and know-how, with the world’s top 30 companies accounting for about 90% of the global market share (as of 2022). On the other hand, the domestic fabless market share is insufficient at 1%.

The Global Star Fabless Project is a long-term project to foster Korea’s Fabless at the top of the world. The government plans to support the development of Star Fabless by supporting technology development and applying preferential standards for various semiconductor support policies such as MPW prototype production, finance, domestic and international marketing, and development of design personnel. Previously, the government has supported the growth of early companies by providing design automation tools (EDA tools) and office space, and has also supported prototyping (MPW, etc.) for free foundation access, which is essential for fabless companies. In addition, the “semiconductor ecosystem fund” was launched in June last year to promote Fabrice’s growth and independence, providing 300 billion won. A ‘system semiconductor cluster’ is also being created to strengthen its connection with Foundry.
